VDOT 511 Virginia Traffic 5.0

The Virginia 511 mobile application brings together official information from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), driving and transit directions from Google, navigation with Waze, and other sources of information to create a comprehensive traveler information tool for Virginia.

To use the app, simply open it and enter any location in the search bar. You will then be able to view travel times for driving and/or transit options to that location provided by Google. If you select a specific option, you can access detailed driving or transit directions. Additionally, you can tap on the Waze button to open the Waze App for navigation to your destination (please note that installation of the Waze app is required for this feature).

The app also provides access to various features through the map. By selecting toggle options from the overlays menu in the upper right, you can view VDOT cameras, incident reports, construction details, bridge openings, and more. You can also rearrange the Map Layers in the menu using the pencil icon.

In the upper left corner of the main menu, you will find access to Twitter feeds, cameras by route, travel times for predefined road segments, links to other commuter services in your area, and more. The settings can be accessed at the bottom of the main menu and include an option to sign up for trip notifications. Trip notifications allow you to specify a recurring trip and desired arrival time. You will then receive a push notification in advance of your necessary departure time based on current traffic conditions each day. Please keep in mind that traffic conditions can change rapidly, so travel and arrival times are only estimates and cannot be guaranteed.

In Northern Virginia, the app offers additional information such as VRE rail and PRTC bus schedules and routes, as well as real-time VRE train locations. There is also a unique feature that allows limited viewing of drive-to-transit options for these services when the "Nearby Transit Options" is selected from certain directions results. These services are expected to expand to other agencies throughout the state in the future. Additionally, other features within the app will continue to be enhanced over time.
